Farmers pain and suffering calculator

Farmers is the sixth-largest U.S. private-passenger auto insurer (NAIC data), with an unusual structure: the Farmers Exchanges are owned by their policyholders, while a Zurich-owned management company runs them as attorney-in-fact. On claims, Farmers has one of the older public paper trails on software-assisted evaluation. That makes the counter-strategy well charted.

Negotiating pain and suffering with Farmers

What the public record teaches

The Consumer Federation of America's 2012 report lists Farmers among insurers that used the Colossus claim-evaluation software. A widely reported 2003 Washington lawsuit, described at the time as the first aimed squarely at Colossus-based adjusting, alleged the system produced artificially low evaluations. In that case an arbitrator later valued at $377,000 a claim the carrier had offered nothing on. Those are allegations and a dated report, not a description of current tools. The lesson still generalizes: software scores what is coded in your medical records, and nothing else.

Feed the inputs that score

Whatever evaluates your file, it reads documentation: physician-recorded work restrictions, objective findings such as imaging and EMG, specialist care, permanency opinions at maximum medical improvement, and continuous treatment. Severity that lives only in your demand letter's adjectives does not exist to a scoring system. Get it into the records first, then run the band math here.

Know the footprint, keep the paper trail

Farmers has been reshaping its book, including withdrawing Farmers-branded auto policies from Florida in 2023, and a carrier tightening its footprint handles claims by procedure. Procedure cuts both ways. Respond to below-band offers in writing with the implied-multiplier math and a deadline, and the same process discipline that produced the low number becomes the record that supports escalation.

Fairness noteSettlementRange has no relationship with Farmers. Carrier-evaluation descriptions here are general industry practice or publicly reported information; every claim is handled individually and your experience may differ. Not a law firm; not legal advice — the method and the math are the point, whatever the logo on the letterhead.
Common questions

FAQ

Does Farmers use Colossus to value injury claims?

A 2012 Consumer Federation of America report listed Farmers among past or then-current Colossus users, and a 2003 lawsuit publicly alleged Colossus-driven undervaluation. Current tools aren't publicly documented. The practical takeaway is unchanged either way: documented, codable medical evidence is what any evaluation system can't score low.

How does Farmers calculate pain and suffering?

From the documented file. In negotiation, any carrier's number gets measured against the standard multiplier band (1.5–5× economic damages by severity). Run yours above, then compare their offer's implied multiplier against it.

My documented claim keeps getting low offers from Farmers. What next?

The standard sequence: implied-multiplier math in writing, a request for their basis, a response deadline, then escalation. A paper trail of below-band offers against a documented file is exactly what makes attorney involvement effective, or in egregious cases a bad-faith posture.
